Considerations for In-Ground Pools
Here are the common types of in-ground pools and their primary advantages.
There are three basic types of in-ground pools: concrete, fiberglass and vinyl-lined. Pools walled with aluminum or steel are also available, but without vinyl lining their disadvantages often outweigh their advantages. Concrete pools are extremely popular because they can be formed into almost any shape and size. Their installation requires three to twelve weeks, which is generally longer than for other types, but they offer far greater strength and durability than other pool types.
There is an additional method of installing concrete pools, although it is definitely less common, whereby the concrete is poured in a way similar to that of a house foundation. This method is more prevalent for pools which are installed into hillsides.
Fiberglass pools are pre-molded into a single bowl-shaped piece which can be lowered via a crane into the ground. Thus, installation is surprisingly convenient and can often take only three days to complete. These pools have a smooth, stain-resistant gel coat finish which offers impressive durability; they are also nonporous, unlike concrete pools, which means less chemicals being used and fewer problems with algae.
Vinyl pools are manufactured from a flexible, pre-formed liner which attaches to a wall frame made of aluminum, steel or a non-corrosive polymer. Although most are rectangular, freeform and L-shaped liners are available, as well. Vinyl liners are available in countless different colors and patterns, making their customization a popular factor amongst homeowners. Installation for these pools generally takes between one and three weeks. However, the liner can be punctured by pets, toys or sharp objects, so it’s recommended to go with a liner that is at least one inch thick.
