Tips for Pool Maintenance
Although all pools are different, and have different maintenance requirements as a result, keeping your pool clean and “healthy” is not so daunting a task as some homeowners may believe. After enduring the process of receiving a quote, having a pool installed and ensuring all finances are in order, regular maintenance is quite simple by comparison. Here are some common tips to keep your pool in the best condition possible.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by skimming your pool’s surface a few times per week. A “hand skimmer” (the net attached to a seemingly ten-foot pole) should be used to remove all bugs, leaves and other debris before it becomes heavier and sinks to the bottom. Not only does it prevent problems with your pool’s circulation system, but it also reduces the required amount of chlorine.
Pool filters fall under three categories: cartridge, diatomaceous earth and sand. Although filter-cleaning should be regular, doing so too often can actually hurt the filtering process. A flow increase between the flow meter and pressure gauge is a good indicator that cleaning is necessary.
Every week, your pool should be vacuumed as an additional way of reducing required chemicals, and also to help keep your water clear. There are also other weekly types of maintenance: brushing the tile and pool walls helps to minimize the buildup of algae and calcium deposits, which can develop into serious problems if left unaddressed. The type of pool walls you have will determine the proper cleaning tools: stiff brushes are better for concrete pools with plaster lining, while soft brushes are better for tiles, vinyl and fiberglass walls.
Finally, always check [and maintain] your pool’s water level. Plenty of water will be lost due to swimming, splashing and evaporation, and the water level should not fall below the skimmer’s level to prevent damage to the pump.
